She comes from the house of an army man Colonel Ajay Kumar Sharma and his wife Ashima Sharma a homemaker. She was born on 1 May 1988 in the religious city Ayodhya of Uttar Pradesh. She took education in Army School and spent most of her childhood in Bangalore. She had a great desire for the modeling profession for the reason she took admission at the Elite Model Management.

She joined the acting industry in the year 2007 with the film "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" starring opposite Shah Rukh Khan. In 2010, she starred in the film 'Band Baaja Baaraat.' Her work in the film 'Sultan" in which she portrayed Aarfa Hussain also gained public attention. She appeared as a lead in the film "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil."
