American actor James LaRue Avery was born in Suffolk, Virginia, the U.S. on November 27, 1945. Besides acting he was also voice artist and poet. He was married to Barbara Waters in 1988. He does not have any child of his own but has a stepson. He died with the complication in his open heart surgery in Glendale, California, the U.S. on December 31, 2013.

He was Detective #2 in Fletch and was Connors in Appointment With Fear in 1985. Worked in six films in 1986 which were Fist of the North Star as Fang, The Eleventh Commandment as Larry, 8 Million Ways to Die as Deputy D.A., The Ladies Club as Joe, Stoogemania as Gulch, Extremities as a Security Guard. And played various characters which include Uncle John in Think Tank, Gus in Lethal Eviction, Edward in Valediction, Audition actor #2 in Wish I Was Here.

He had done a lot of work in television and his most appreciable role was of Phillip Banks in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Some of his other works were four roles in 1983 of Mardian in Antony and Cleopatra, Gabriel in Tales of the Gold Monkey, Construction Guy in Newhart, Coleman in The Jeffersons.He had worked in 9 TV series in 1984 Simon & Simon as Huey, Roy, Hill Street Blues as Tolliver, Legmen as No Neck, Hardcastle, and McCormick, Going Bananas as Hank, Webster as Judge, Fist of the North Star as Fang (voice), The Dukes of Hazzard as Charlie, Brothers as Bubba Dean. Ten roles in 1985 as Councilman Waters in Street Hawk, Mental Patient in St. Elsewhere, one episode of Cagney & Lacey, one of which was of Tv movie Kicks and he was Stanley in it. He was Jean-Marie in Space and was Nabuti in Scarecrow and Mrs. King and many more characters were played by him from 1985 to 2013 which includes Judge Parsons in Hunt for the Labyrinth Killer, Sam in Grey's Anatomy, Dr. Crippen in The Closer.

Also voice to Crandall Smythe in The Proud Family, to Chief Keewazi in The Legend of Tarzan, to Gorilla in The Wild Thornberrys. His voice was also heard in the character Danny in Extreme Ghostbusters and to the Headman in ABC Weekend Special.
