He put his step in the entertainment industry in the year 1975. He worked on stage in his starting career. His first film role was in the low-budget film "Split." He gained fame with his appearance in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He played supporting roles in the film Mississippi Burning, London Kills Me, Sinner. He appeared as Dr. Amos "Doc" Cochran in the television series 'Deadwood.'
