He was Major Gowen in the BBC TV comedy Fawlty Towers and with the similar character, he appeared in the legal drama "The Main Chance". He was a retired military man again in BBC Radio 4's The Archers. He had a starring role in Fresh Fields. He appeared regularly on "quota quickies".
