About Arthur Anderson
Arthur E Andersen was born in Plano, Illinois on 30 may 1885. When he was 16, his parents died and then he starts working in days as a mailbox and attending night school. In 1908, he completed his graduation in a night school called Kellogg School at Northwestern University during this year he becomes the youngest CPA in Illinois he was 23 at just at the time.
Career of Arthur Anderson
He founded Andersen, DeLany & Co. by joining hands with Clarence DeLany in 1913. Their first client was Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee. And in 1915 the firm opened its second office in Milwaukee in 1918 they changed the name of firm to Arthur Andersen & Co. He had much interest in education and at that time new profession was developed which was Accounting. He was very generous in aiding to the educational, civic and charitable organization and also believed in training in the normal working hour he was elected to a board of trustees at Northwestern University in 1927 and also worked as president from 1930 to 1932. He also served as a chairman of the board of Certified Public Accountant.
He was a big supporter of advanced accounting and strictly honest he said that an accountant responsibility is an investor not their client's management. He used to believe that "Think straight, talk straight. He was the first person to propose FASB that the stock option should be included on expense report which affects net profit as a cash compensation.
In 1980, he had established a reputation for IT consultancy after that his firm increased its consultancy practice because a lot of revenue comes from such practice while the audit partners were encouraged to charge consultancy fees from existing clients and in the late 1990s he was successful in tripling the share of his partner.
It was predicted that he struggled a lot with maintaining its faithfulness of the Accounting standard with his clients.
Two of the Comptroller General of US government accountability office was his top executive. He was also alleged to be involved in fraudulent accounting and auditing of Sunbeam Products, Waste Management, Inc, Asia Pulp & Paper, the Baptist Foundation of Arizona, WorldCom.
After working for 89 years he retired from the posts of auditor of public companies and his Chicago based company was convicted in June for shredding and doctoring the document relating to Enron Audit which led to the downfall of his company.
