Some Lesser Known Facts About Edward Jenner
- When he was small he was injected for small pox and that put an effect on his health for the whole life.
- When he was 14 years old then he starts the practice of becoming a surgeon for seven years under the Daniel Ludlow, a surgeon of Chipping Sodbury.
- At the age of 5, his parents died and he was supported by his siblings. When he got married his first son was died of tuberculosis in 1810 and later in 1815 after a long fight with disease his wife also died due to tuberculosis.
- After getting the sufficient knowledge from the surgeon Daniel Ludlow he moved to St. George?s Hospital in London where he got his training under the most famous surgeon at that time named John Hunter. He and Hunter also remain good friends until the death of Hunter.
- He wrote about the cuckoo bird misunderstanding behavior. Cuckoo bird lays his egg to the another nest and that cuckoo eggs destroying all egg of that nest and only the egg of cuckoo remains. Later it was believed that the little cuckoo bird has the depression on its back due to which he pushes all the eggs out of the nest and this depression gone after the 12 days. He wrote all this on paper but does not believe until the pictures were out.
- There is a statue of him in the Gloucester Cathedral and in the Kensington Gardens.
- James Phipps was the first person on whom he tried his first cowpox vaccine which was made by himself. He was the son of his gardener and after giving a vaccine for first few weeks he was ill but later his health became good and his experiment got successful.
- He was the president of the Jennerian Society who gives the vaccination against smallpox but later he resign. After that, he was selected as a foreign member in 1802 by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1806 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
- There are so many monuments and buildings are formed in honor of him like there is a Jennersville, Pennsylvania, which was located in the Chester County, in France there is a monument to him that is outside the walls of the upper town of Boulogne sur Mer, there is a building at The Henry Cort Community College, Fareham, Hampshire which was named after him.
