Some Lesser Known Facts About Christopher Columbus
- In 1470, at the age of 19, on one of his employer's ship he took his first long ride to the island of Chios in the Aegean Sea. He learned driving the ship on the open sea only on his first ride and the second ride to Chios.
- He left his father's woolen shop and school when he was 14, to get the training as a merchant on a trading ship.
- He disturbed the economy of three continents. The first time he landed a place which today is called Watling Island in the Bahamas but actually more than 8,000 miles away.
- Before becoming a great Governor and Admiral he was the pirate and also helped to attack Moorish merchant trips.
- Columbus was a very religious and he gave religious names to many places where he landed.
- Columbus also wrote one book named 'Book of Privileges' in which all the promises are described which was given by Spanish crown from early years and how they never completed their promise.
- When he was on his fourth voyage, he was suffering from a big pain. His eyes were bleeding and after that for a long time, he got blind. He even used to sit or stand with difficulty because of his joint pains.
- When he was on the third voyage on northern South America Atlantic he saw the empty Orinoco River and he said that he found 'Garden of Eden'.
- In Colonial days Columbus day was not official. It got official first in 1906 in Colorado and in 1937 a federal holiday. Later this holiday shifted to the second Monday from 1970.
