Some Lesser Known Facts About Sacagawea
- In early twentieth century, the National American Woman Suffrage Association took her as the symbol of the women's worth and independence.
- She was kidnapped by the Hidatsa in a battle along with many girls and at that time she was around 12 years old. In that battle, many died.
- When she was 13 years old she got married to Toussaint Charbonneau, a Quebecois trapper along with another wife. It is that he purchased his both wives from Hidatsa or won her in the gambling.
- For many time her name was in the controversies because of the correct spelling and pronunciation of her name. There are different spelling or meaning of her name in English. It can be pronounced sack-uh-guh-wee-a or can be called Sakakawea and also called Sacajawea.
- By the Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, she and her husband were invited to the campaign which was started on 14th May 1804 and also named as Corps of Discovery. The journey was around 3,700-mile from Mississippi River to find a route on Pacific ocean.
- She was the only women on that trip and also was there as the translator. She and her husband were there as a translator. She did not speak English so she talked to the Shoshone and convert into Hidasta to her husband who also doesn't know to speak English.
- She saves the journals and records when the boat almost overturns in the storm and on the 20th May 1805 in her honor the Sacagawea River in Montana was named after her.
- On the expedition, she was not only playing a role of the translator but also a good cook, a cleaner, a person who make the clothes and so on. For this contribution towards expedition she never paid. Her husband was paid for his and his wife helps in the tour because at that time the importance was given to only men, not women.
- In 2000 she was featured on the dollar coin but the picture on the coin is not her because they don't have the real portrait of her so she put the picture of the modern Shoshone-Bannock woman called Randy'L He-dow Teton.
