Some Lesser Known Facts About Ashoka
- Did Ashoka takes alcohol? NA.
- Was Ashoka in the habit of Smoking? NA.
- He was the third ruler of the Mauryan Emperor and his reign spread from 268-232 BCE. He was such a great Emporer that he got victory over almost all of the Indian Subcontinent. His territory was spread not only in India but also in Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
- His year of birth is still a mystery. Some historian says that he says that he was born around 304 BC while others have different opinions. Also, according to some legends, King Ashoka had 100 siblings while records are available of only three brothers.
- The name of his mother is also under debate as it is written as Subhadrangi in some sources while other records say her name was Dharma. Her background is also a reason for conflict as according to some sources she was from a Brahmin family while others say she was a barber girl, King noticed her and married her. She was killed on an order of Prince Sushima. It is said that Ashoka ordered the death of Sushima just after taking the throne.
- As a child, he was not liked by his father as he had rough skin and was not at all attractive. But, Ashoka excelled in studies and military training which made him most eligible to become a king. Also according to some legends, he alongside his brother was sent for a quest at Takshashila (now in Pakistan) and the winner of the competition was announced as the king.

- Though Ashoka is known for his role in the spread of Buddhism his early life was filled with violence and he fought many battles in his life. One of the most remembered battles was the war of Kalinga (present-day Odisha) in which over half a million people died while others died due to famine and diseases after the war. The heart of the king changed after this violence and he became a devoted Buddhist.

- It is estimated that he was good in trade and aimed to spread his territory that's why he wanted to conquer Kalinga as it was near the sea and was best suited for foreign trade.
- He was the only emperor in history who adopted peace and universal brotherhood in place of violence.

- According to some sources from Sri Lanka, the King murdered his 99 half-brothers. In some legends, it is said that Ashoka's brother Tissa (the only surviving brother) was a careless person and used to tease Buddhist monks for not enjoying their life. One day, Ashoka planned to teach him a lesson. One of the loyal ministers of the king encouraged Tissa to sit on the throne at the same time King arrived. He ordered a death sentence for his brother after seven days as a punishment for illegally taking King's throne. Though not punished by the king, Tissa realized the eventual death and decided to become an arhat.

- He was secular. Though he himself followed Buddhism Ashoka also respected other religions and there was a freedom to follow any religion in his reign.
- One of the greatest contributions of King Ashoka is the pillars that are helpful for historians to study his empire. In India, we can see around 19 inscribed pillars and six pillars with animals. One of his pillars is respected in the Indian constitution as National Emblem.
