About Ragunan Zoo
Ragunan Zoo is a popular zoo situated in South Jakarta of Indonesia. It is spread in an area of 140 hectares. It was founded at its old location in 1864 but was shifted to its current location in June 1966. The opening timing of the zoo is 6:00 am to 4:00 pm from Tuesday to Sunday. It remains closed on Monday. A ticket price of Rupiah 4000 for an adult and Rupiah 3000 for a child is required to pay to visit the zoo.
How To Reach Ragunan Zoo
You can easily reach the museum using the Transjakarta bus of route Dukuh Atas-Ragunan and the Monas-Ragunan route whichever is suitable which leaves you in front of the gate. If you are going there by train then you have to get off at Tanjung Barat station which is about 40-minute walking distance from the zoo.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Ragunan Zoo
- The zoo is home to about 2288 animals belonging to 335 species. You can see animals like Sumatran tiger, crocodile, gorilla, orangutan, peacock, tapir, and many other animals.

- It is the oldest zoo in the country and is successfully running for over 150 years since its foundation.
- The zoo also owns an aviary where the visitors can see several different types of birds including ostrich and cassowary. Some birds are kept in small cages while others in a large aviary. Its collection includes Javan peafowl, common hill myna, crested serpent eagle, and Javan hawk-eagle.

- As the zoo is located close to Ragunan lake, you can enjoy boat rides on the lake and events like pony cart on Sundays.

- Children's Zoo, rides, and playground are also available for young visitors.

- The Schmutzer Primate Centre is also a part of the zoo but is managed and funded by a private organization. It displays gorillas, orangutans, and chimpanzees in their natural habitat. The visitors are allowed to see them through a thick dark glass while the orangutans could not see them due to dark glasses.
