About Alhambra
The Alhambra is a popular palace situated in Granada city of Spain. It was originally built in 889 CE and was later on rebuilt in the mid -13th century. The current palace was built by Arab Nasrid emir Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar. It was designated as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984. It became a royal palace under the reign of Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada while became the Royal Court at the time of the Christian Reconquista.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Alhambra
- It was a military base in the ninth century but later on, became the royal residence in the 13th century.
- The complex includes royal apartments, military barracks, gardens, royal palaces, mosques, and churches surrounded by a high stone wall.
- The palace is situated on a beautifully located surrounded by river Darro on the one side while the valley of al-Sabika on the other. There was a great strategy of making the fort on a hill so as to overlook the whole city.

- It turned into ruins at the time of French Domination but was later on restored in the nineteenth century.
- The palace was described as "a pearl set in emeralds" by several Moorish poets.
- Though most of the buildings were whitewashed at the site but now after centuries of making it. It looks reddish.
