About Carolingian Westwork and Civitas Corvey
The Princely Abbey of Corvey is an old Benedictine abbey situated in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was consecrated in 844. It was one of six self-ruling abbeys of the Holy Roman Empire from the late middle ages to 1792. It was secularized in 1803. It is situated near the Western RiverIt was designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Carolingian Westwork and Civitas Corvey

  • The abbey suffered damage in the thirteenth century. When the fellow town Hoxter was envious of its nearby ruler and its Weser Bridge. They joined hands with the Bishop of Paderborn after which troops destroyed the town of Corvey and abbey. The damage was never recovered and responsible for the decline of the abbey.
  • The imperial troops sacked the abbey building at the time of the Thirty Years War in 1634.
  • The library of the abbey contains seventy-four thousand items that are available in English, German, and French. The library is also known for its librarian who was a popular poet and author named Deutschlandlied, August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben. He worked here for 14 years starting from 1860. After his death in 1874, his body was buried in the church graveyard.
