About Saltaire
Saltaire is a self-contained village situated in West Yorkshire in England. The village is located in Shipley and is a part of the City of Bradford Metropolitan District. It was constructed in 1851 covering an area of 20 hectares. The area was built by Sir Titus Salt who shifted his business to this place from Bradford. He also built stone houses so that the workers can live here comfortably and work in his mill. The mill was closed in February 1986 and was sold to Jonathan Silver.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Saltaire

  • The single-story building which is situated just opposite the main gate of the mill has a ground floor that is twenty feet below the road level. It was a canteen and workers used to go there using a tunnel under the road. A second concrete floor was built but it collapsed after a short time in which one worker was killed.
