About Kathmandu Valley
Kathmandu Valley is the site of an ancient civilization located in Bagmati Pradesh of Nepal. It contains about 130 monuments with numerous pilgrimage sites of Hindus and Buddhists. It was declared as World Heritage Site in 1979. The area about 665 kilometers square contains seven World Heritage Sites. It is a bowl-shaped valley located about 1,425 meters above sea level. It is the most populated and most developed area throughout Nepal.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Kathmandu Valley
- It is the biggest city across the Himalayan hill region.
- The valley suffered a devastating earthquake in April 2015 in which thousands of people died and several infrastructures were destructed across the region.

- The site is popular due to its unique architecture and a number of jatras (street festivals) attracting several tourists throughout the world.

- According to geologists, the valley was a lake named Paleo Kathmandu Lake at a time. Also according to the mythology, it is believed to make from the lake through the different versions in different books.

- Freak Street is also an important place to visit in the valley which was resided by the hippies in the 1960s and 1970s who used to smoke cannabis and drugs. (The idea of the Hindi film ?Hare Rama Hare Krishna? was perhaps taken from this place).

- The world's highest peak "Mt Everest" is just 240 kilometers away from the valley. It could be seen from the valley.

- It was a big trade center due to its location in between India and Tibet.
- The Pashupati is also a popular Hindu pilgrimage which is located on the Bank of Bagmati River. In addition to being a big Hindu temple, it is also known for its magnificent architecture. (Take care, only Hindus are allowed to enter the temple premises)

- The valley was never being a colony of any foreign country. Even the big countries like India, China have some past of being under foreign control. But this is not in the case of Nepal.
- The valley was ruled by kings until 2008. The Shah dynasty ruled the region from 1768 to 2008.
- The city has over three hundred temples, monuments, and monasteries, each of which tells the story of the culture, art, and rich architecture of the place.
