About Dam Square
Dam square is an open public place and is the heart of the city of Amsterdam. It is surrounded by Nieuwendijk, Damrak, Warmoesstraat, Damstraat, Mozes en Aäronstraat, Paleisstraat, and Kalverstraat, Rokin, Nes. It is just 750 meters away from Centraal Station and is at the original location of the dam in river Amstel. It links the streets Damrak and Rokin and also the endpoint of the streets like Damstraat, Nieuwendijk, and Kalverstraat. The place is also close to the famous De Wallen. It was a place for the largest fish market as ships moored at the dam to load and unload goods.

  • The place witnessed cruel events including brutal killed at the time of the Second World War. On 7 May 1945, when the Netherlands was occupied by Nazi Germany, thousands of Dutch people were waiting for the Canadian troops to arrive at the place. Members of the German Kriegsmarine watched the crowd from the Grote Club and started shooting in the crowd with the machine gun. Dutch people still don't know the reason behind this shooting.
