Tapkeshwar Mahadev is an old Shiva temple located close to Sahastradhara is also a significant tourist location in Dehradun city. The temple is known for the regular flow of water on the Shiva linga which is why the temple got its name. It is situated on the bank of Tons River. Here you can enjoy the panoramic view of beautiful mountains, Tons River and divine blessings of Lord Shiva. There is no entry fee to have access to the temple, however, you can donate if you want to. it remains open from early morning at 4:00 am until 10:30 pm.

The temple is easily accessible and is just 6.5 kilometer away from Dehradun city. It is well-connected with several means of transport available and you can pick whichever is suitable.

  • Legend relating to temple
    It is believed that the cave was the dwelling place of Dronacharya, who was the teacher of Pandavas and Kauravas according to the Hindu epic Mahabharata. The cave is named as Drona Cave on his name. It is said that Dronacharya lived a miserable life and don’t have money to feed his newborn son cow’s milk and his wife was unable to breastfeed him. At the time, they prayed to Lord Shiva and drippings of milk appeared on the linga situated in the cave, which was feed to the newborn. Even today, you can see drippings of water on Shiva linga though it is not milk nowadays but devotees believes that there were drippings of milk at that time.
  • The temple is a home to the beautiful Tons River that flows just beneath the cave. Many devotees took a bath in the river before entering the temple.
