About Tanot Mata Temple
Tanot Mata Temple is a ninth-century temple located in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan. The temple is very close to the Indian-Pakistan border and is a witness of war between India and Pakistan in 1965. The temple is maintained and managed by the Border Security Force of India. The temple could be visited any time between 5:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. all seven days of the week. No entry fee is charged to visit the temple.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Tanot Mata Temple
- The temple is devoted to Goddess Aavad, also known as Tanot Mata who is an incarnation of Hinglaj Mata. She was the daughter of Mamadji Charan and lived her life as a warrior sage.
- It is a witness of the Indo-Pak war in 1965. As the temple is just twenty kilometers away from the border, it remained standing there at the time of war. It was attacked by Pakistan Army and over 3000 bombs were fired on the temple. According to the locals, no bomb hit the target or exploded. The devotees believe that the deity protected Indian soldiers and is credited for India's victory in the war.

- The legend related to the temple is that a man named Mamadji Charan was a childless man. He traveled on foot seven times to Hinglaj Mata to get a child. The deity appeared in his dream and asked whether he wanted a son or a daughter. Charan replied that he would be glad if the deity took birth in his house. With the blessing of Hinglaj Mata, he got seven daughters and one son and one of his daughters was Tanot Mata who was the incarnation of HingLaj Mata. The deity is worshiped as the goddess of battle.
- The area receives scorching heat from the sun and temperature goes up to 49 degrees in the peak time. The best time to visit the temple is from November to January.
- The temple was also mentioned in the 1997 film "Border" based on the India-Pak war.
- Not only in the war of 1965 but also in the 1971 war the temple protected Indian soldiers. At this time, the Pakistani tanks who targeted at the temple bogged down in the sand which allowed the Indian Air Force to easily destroy them. A Vijay Stambha (Victory Tower) was made by the Indian Army after the 1971 war.
