About Doryodo Ruins
Doryodo Ruins are the remains of an old temple located in the center of the popular Otukayama Park. It is a kami temple named Doryo which means “End of the Road Temple.” The temple belonged to Edo Period and it was located on a well-traveled highway. It was also connected with the popular Silk route. It was made for the purpose that travelers can stop and rest there. Though adventure seekers have interpreted another meaning to the name like the end of the life. It was made in 1874 by a wealthy merchant named Otsuka Gorokichi.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Doryodo Ruins
- An 82-year-old woman who was in charge of maintaining the premises was brutally killed by robbers in 1963. She opposed the robbers and wanted to save the temple’s assets, and was murdered as a result. The robbers took away the temple’s worth after killing her. Many people claimed that they have heard the ghost of an old man crying in the forest. Some say that she was crying as the couldn’t save the temple’s worthwhile, other says she didn’t want to die. Whatever the reason, it is said that the temple is haunted by the ghost of that woman.

- After ten years in 1973, a fourth year student of Saint Paul’s University was also murdered by a 38-year-old professor as both had an affair and the professor was married with two children. Though the girl was murdered at another place, but her body was found near Doryodo as the killer planned to remove the body from the scene and dumped the body in a grave near the temple. After sometime, the body of the professor, his wife and two children were found by the fishermen in Shizuoka. They committed family suicide. The body of the student was found seven months later. Local people claims that they heard a voice of a young woman from the woods calling “Here! I’m here!” as she was waiting to be found out.
