Brihadisvara Temple is a prominent Hindu temple located in Tamil Nadu. The temple was constructed in 1035 under the order of Rajendra Chola 1. The temple is also dedicated to Lord Shiva and is a Dravidian-style temple like Brihadeeswarar Temple. It also has statues of other deities like Surya, Durga, Vishnu, and Ardhanarishvara. It is a protected monument conserved by the Archaeological Survey of India. The temple opens every day from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm while evening darshan starts from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. There is no ticket or any fee to enter the temple premises.

How To Reach Brihadisvara Temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram

The temple is located on Highway 81 which connects Tiruchirappalli and Chidambaram. It is about 50 kilometers from Chidambaram and 280 kilometers if you are going there from Chennai. If you are visiting Brihadeeswarar Temple of Thanjavur, you are just 70 kilometers away from the location. Several means of transport are available which will take you to the temple. Bus
If you are going there by bus then you have to take any of the buses for National Highways 36, 81, and 245 of Tamil Nadu bus services to reach your destination.
Train
If you prefer a train journey, several trains run for Chidambaram railway station which will take you comfortably. After reaching the station, you can take any of the local transport and reach the temple.
Air

The temple is one of the most visited tourist attractions and is an important place for those who want to explore Indian history and the Chola dynasty.
It is also a part of the World Heritage Site alongside Brihadeeswarar Temple at Thanjavur and Airavatesvara temple at Darasuram since 2004.
The temple is famous for several bronze sculptures alongside artwork on its walls.
You will be amazed to know that the whole city of Gangaikonda Cholapuram and several other major Chola-era Hindu temples was destroyed in the period of 900 to 1215 but this temple remained safe. It is still an active temple and four daily rituals are performed here even today.
The major festivals celebrated here are Shivarathri which falls in the Tamil month of Masi (February -March), Thiruvadirai in the month of Margazhi (December-January), and Aipassi Pournami in the month of Aipassi(October- November)
One more important fact about the temple is the well located in the temple was filled with water from the Ganges which was brought in pots by the kingdoms who were defeated by the Chola kingdom in the eleventh century. It was originally named Cholagangam.
