About Place de la Concorde
Located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris is the Place de le Concorde. It is a popular square in the region and is known for its historical significance and the executions that took place. It is a tourist spot owing to the historical context and its turbulent past but also for the present day location with views of Paris from the obelisk.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Place de la Concorde
- The original square was designed and built between the years 1757 and 1779. It was named Place Louis XV. A statue was also erected in honor of Louis XV, for celebrating his health and wellness after a long illness.
- The figure of Louis XV of France was destroyed and melted in 1792, after which the square got a new name Place de la Revolution, meaning revolution square. It was this very spot where public beheadings by guillotine of 1,200 people were held, including Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI.
- It was then known as Place de la Concorde. The area was renovated sometime between 1836 and 1840. After which a giant 3,000-years-old Egyptian obelisk from Luxor, presented by the Khedive of Egypt, was positioned in the center of the square.
- Aligned with the obelisk, exists 2 fountains inspired by the fountains of Rome. These are river and sea-themed. Also, to the northern side of the square, one can see the premises of the French Naval Ministry and the Crillon hotel.
- The view from the obelisk is breath-takingly beautiful. On one side you can see the Tuileries gardens and the Lourve museum and on the other you see the Arc de triomphe!
- If one finds themselves in time for the much-celebrated Bastille Day, you might get a chance to witness a military parade marches led by the President of France marches through Place de la Concorde from Arc de Triomphe.
