- It signifies as the resting place of the fallen sailors and marines which number to 1102. The attack on Pearl Harbor on the fateful day of December 7, 1941, was the catalyst for America?s involvement in the Second WW.

- To reach the site, one can only go by the way of water. Earlier, it was possible to take a boat and take a tour of the memorial but since commercial vessels are no longer allowed, the only way is to get on is on the Navy shuttle boat that is part of the Arizona Memorial program.

- The Memorial was constructed in the year 1962 designed by architect Alfred Preis. It has 3 main areas, namely, entry, assembly room, and shrine. It is built atop the sunken hull of the battleship, but it doesn?t really touch it. The memorial also has an opening on the floor overlooking the sunken decks. It is from this opening that visitors can pay their respects by tossing flowers in honor of the fallen.

- On May 5, 1989, the remains of the battleship were listed as a National Historic Landmark. Robert Ripley, who hosted the popular TV show ?Ripley's Believe It or Not!?, visited Pearl Harbor in 1942. Later in the year 1948, he did a radio broadcast from Pearl Harbor. He then got in contact with the Department of the Navy. He expressed his desire to Admiral J.J. Manning of the Docks for a permanent memorial.

- While the initial request was overlooked because of cost concerns, a permanent Memorial was a gesture that the Navy would want to honor. It was later built-in 1962. It was then dedicated to Memorial Day by Congressman and Chairman of Veteran Affairs Olin E. Teague and future-Governor John A. Burns.

- On December 6, 1941, Arizona took 1.5 million gallons of fuel in preparation for its scheduled trip to the mainland later. The next day, much of it fed the explosion. After almost 70 years after its demise, Arizona continues to spill up to 9 quarts of oil into the harbor each day. This spillage is referred to as the "tears of the Arizona," or "black tears." Scientists have warned of a catastrophic eruption of oil from the wreckage, which they believe would cause extensive damage to the Hawaiian shoreline.

- The site has about 2 million visitors yearly. The USS Arizona Memorial is one of several sites in Hawaii that are part of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. It is also an active military base. There is the Battleship Missouri Memorial and the Aviation Museum are both located on Ford Island.
