About Leaning Tower of Pisa
It is a bell tower standing at Pisa city of Italy. It is over fifty metres high from the low side of the ground while more than 56 meters high from the high side. It was constructed in the 12th century.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Leaning Tower of Pisa
- Its construction started in August 1173 but it took about two hundred years to complete the tower due to various military conflicts it was finally completed in the year 1372.
- Although the tower is popular due to its leaning shape it could be avoided if the architecture at the time follows a better plan. As the shallow foundation and soft ground were too unstable to support the building which was the main reason the tower is leaning.
- As time passed the tower is leaning more and more. Although a team of engineers worked and leveled the soil under the tower to correct the leaning it does not gave effective result. In 2008, when they balanced the soil for the second time it put some break on the continued slouching.
- As the city of Pisa has marshy land, there are several other leaning towers in the city besides this popular tower.
- Benito Mussolini tried to destruct the tower and also drills various holes at the base which made it more lean.
