About Gateway Of India Mumbai

It is a monument which was made for the landing of King-Emperor George V and Queen-Empress Mary in early twentieth century.

When you visit the monument it gives you a glimpse of the Indo-Saracenic style which means a combination of India and Islamic architecture.
The project was proposed to welcome King George V and Queen Mary but when they arrived they saw the Cardboard model as the masterpiece was not ready at the time.
Yellow basalt an reinforced concrete was used to make the monument at the Apollo Bunder.
The monument was designed by George Wittet.

The arc is about 26 meters high while the central dome is about 83 feet high and is 48 feet in diameter. It cost the authorities about 24 lakh rupees and was completed in the year 1924.

On February 28, 1948, first Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry passed through the monument which denoted the end of British rule.

Gateway of India was subject to the terrorist attack on 26 November 2008 which shaken the whole India. Hotel Taj which suffered the major loss in the attack is very close to the monument.
