Some Lesser Known Facts About Diamond Head State Monument
- It is said that the area got its name in the 19th century when British sailors mistook the carbonate mineral, Calcite, for diamonds on the beach. Its Hawaiian name, Leahi, means ?the tuna fish?s brow?. It is appropriate as from a distance it looks like the fin of a tuna fish.
- It is formed from a dead volcano, so it is positive that it won?t erupt in the future. The Diamond Head Mountain is about 760 feet from above sea level. The state monument covers about over 475 acres of land.
- In the year 1968, Diamond Head has declared a National Natural Landmark. In the year 1905, the U.S. govt. developed around 720 acres into Fort Ruger, as a way to strengthen the country?s coast artillery defense.
- From the Diamond Head Observation Station, you can get a 360-degree view of the scenery in the surrounding area. It is also a designated U.S. National Natural Monument. The volcanic tuff cone is a State Monument.
- The summit, historically, has always been used for navigation. A different meaning of Le?ahi is ?fire headland?, which refers to navigational fires that were lit to guide canoes traveling along the shoreline in ancient times.
- Diamond Head was selected as a fortification because the crater walls are a natural defense from the summit, and ships can be seen from Koko Head to Pearl Harbor. In the year 1908-1910, the Fire Control Station was constructed to view potential sea and air attacks.
- The hiking trail is like no other. Walking to the edge of a volcano is a rare opportunity. The trail begins as a concrete pathway then becomes a dirt path about halfway. The round trip takes about 2 hours. It finds its way through the ?haole koa? forest. The summit offers stunning views of Oahu?s southeastern coastline towards Koko Head and the islands of Molokai, Lanai, and Maui.
- It remains a major tourist attraction and has regular tours for sightseeing at the Waimea Waterfall and sunset tours on electric scooters and bikes for nearby attractions as well.
