About Fountains Abbey
Fountains Abbey is a historic monastery situated in North Yorkshire. The abbey was founded in the year 1132 with the efforts of Benedictine monks. It worked for over 400 years until an order was passed by Henry VIII for the dissolution of the monastery in 1539. The abbey opens every morning at 10:00 am and closed in the evening at 4:30. The Cistercian architecture was used to construct the Abbey. It is situated just five kilometers away from Ripon (a city in North Yorkshire), and also close to Aldfield village.

  • It was one of the biggest and wealthiest monasteries all over England before its closure in 1539.
  • The abbey served as a burial site for many important people like Roger de Mowbray, his wife and daughter; Henry de Percy, and John de Mowbray.
