About Monastic Island of Reichenau

Reichenau Island as the name suggests is an island situated in Lake Constance in South Germany. It is situated between the Gnadensee and the Untersee. The island covers an area of 4.3 kilometers square. It is connected to the mainland with a causeway which was made in 1838. The island is the home of the Abbey of Reichenau due to which it got the status of World Heritage Site in 2000.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Monastic Island of Reichenau

The highest point on the island is Hochwart which is 43 meters above the lake surface.
The island is connected with a low road bridge through which ordinary boats can pass but not sailboats.
Monastic Island is also popular for vegetations. A natural reserve named Wollmatinger Ried is located adjacent to the island. A reserve is a stopover place for many migrating birds.
Besides the popular Abbey of Reichenau, there are also two other churches consecrated to Saint George and to Saints Peter and Paul.
The artworks on the island the Ottonian murals of wonders of Christ are from the tenth century.
