About St Kilda

St Kilda is an island group located in the North Atlantic ocean. The islands are spread in an area of 3.3 square miles. The largest island in the group is Hirta. Sea cliffs on this island are the highest all over the United Kingdom. The islands were inhabited by humans during historic and prehistoric periods. There are no permanent residents on the island since 1930. The highest elevation in the island groups is Conachair which is 430 metres high.

Some Lesser Known Facts About St Kilda

There are number of Cleit in the islands. Though many of them fell into disrepair while about 170 still remains.
There were attempts to rebuild the village on Hirta in the 19th century but there was a spread of smallpox and cholera which was brought to the island by some visiting ships. There remained only a few residents in the village due to high death rates. New families were brought but many people emigrated to other places leaving the island isolated until 1930.
Several Stone grinders, hoe-blades, and knives were found on Mullach Sgar above Village Bay which gives hint about the prehistoric and Neolithic settlements at the place.
The islands are a breeding ground for several seabirds like Atlantic puffins, northern gannets, and more.
