About Henderson Island
Henderson Island is an island situated in the south Pacific Ocean. It is an uninhabited island and is one among the Pitcairn Island Group alongside Oeno, Pitcairn, and Ducie islands. It is spread in an area of 37.3 kilometers square. The island is situated halfway between Chile and New Zealand and is a British Overseas territory. Its ecosystem remained untouched by human intervention as it is a faraway island. It is one of the two raised coral atolls throughout the world. It earned the title of World Heritage Site in the year 1988.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Henderson Island

  • Though it is an uninhabited island now there was a time when people lived there. It is estimated that around 800 AD to 1600 AD but there is no specific reason for their disappearance. Maybe because of lack of resources there.
  • The island was first discovered by Portuguese captain Pedro Fernandes de Queirós in 1606 who named it San Juan Bautista. It was rediscovered by Captain Henderson of the British East India Company.
  • The island became a rescue center for the 20 crewmen who were in the whaleship Essex which was sunk by a sperm whale in November 1820. All of them remained safe eating fishes, crabs, and birds available on the island. Also in 1957, an American named Robert Tomarchin lived here with his chimpanzee for two months.
  • A variety of tree species including coconut palms, Cordia subcordata, Pandanus victorious and Hernandia strokes found here. About 51 species of flowering plants are found on the island ten of which are found only on this island. All of the islands is covered with five to ten meter tall tangled bushes.

  • Four bird species Henderson lorikeet, Henderson crake, Henderson fruit dove, and Henderson reed warbler are found here and are not available at any other place in the world. Polynesian sandpiper was used to found here but is now extinct from the world. Also an endangered species Henderson petrel are believed to be on this island.

  • Though it is an uninhabited island plastic pollution is a major problem on its beaches. It is due to the South Pacific Gyre. It is estimated that the island beaches contain over 37.7 million items of debris weighing over 17 tonnes. It is estimated that every day 17 to 268 new items washed up on a ten-meter section. Due to this pollution, a paradise is turning into a huge pile of garbage. Though attempts are done to clean plastic pollution it is available in such a large amount and weather conditions on the island do not support the program. It is our duty to protect our oceans from the plastic so that these type of island does not suffer. It remains clean and safe for the various species living on the island and underwater nearby this island.
