Located in the beautiful Republic of Ireland, The Shelbourne is a luxury hotel that opened its doors in the 18th century. It has a significant historical value and an appeal for its charm and notoriety. Many distinguished people have stayed at the Shelbourne. And not to mention, it is reputed to be haunted.
Some Lesser Known Facts About The Shelbourne
- Founded and built in 1824 by Martin Burke, the hotel was originally named The Burke. But he realized it doesn't do justice to the estate and so it was named after the second Earl of Shelburne.

- During the year 1922, it was garrisoned by the army of the new Free State. It is also the location where the first Constitution of Ireland as drafted. It was in room number 122 of Shelbourne hotel. The room, now known as Constitution Suite is the hotel?s most famous banqueting room.

- The hotel has hosted many famous personalities including composer Seán Ó Riada, poets Patrick Kavanagh and Seamus Heaney, playwright Brendan Behan, actors like Lilly Collins, James Cagney, Maureen O?Hara, John Wayne, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Rock Hudson, Burl Ives, Orsen Welles, Robert Taylor, and Rita Hayworth. And not to forget John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy. That is quite a guest list!

- Adolf Hitler's elder half-brother, Alois Hitler jr. worked at the hotel during his stay in Dublin in the early 1900s.

- It is the subject of two pieces of writing, one by writer Elizabeth Bowen, called "the Shelbourne hotel" published in the year 1951, discusses the hotel and its history leading up to the World War. The second publication by co-authors Michael O'Sullivan and Bernardine O?Neill, called "The Shelbourne and its People".

- The estate was renovated in the year 2005. This restoration included the the Lord Mayor's lounge, the Horseshoe back, and the Constitution room as well. It?s designs are created by Frank Nicholson, an award winning designer.

- It is said that a young girl died of cholera in the year 1846 on the land. She is said to haunt the premises. Staff members have often reported hearing slamming doors and taps turning on by themselves. She is mischievous and harmless. Nevertheless, guests have been uncomfortable with a "presence" that they have often switched rooms from the luxury rooms.
