The Omni Homestead is a luxury resort situated in the middle of the Alegheany Mountains, Hot springs, Virginia. The resort is famous for hosting national golf championships. It has grown to incorporate an area over 2,300 acre of historic land.
Some Lesser Known Facts About The Omni Homestead Resort
- This is a hotel with an interesting history. After receiving the land grant, Capt. Bullit moved his militia to this land and within two years, the land was cleared and an 18 room wooden hotel was built in its stead. In 1766, the homestead was opened and named in honor of the Homesteaders who built the bathhouses and the resort.
- On July 2, 1901, a fire started in the pastry shop which ended up burning down the entire resort. There weren't any serious injuries or accidents, as the hotel was not at full capacity.
- The homestead has a history that surpasses two centuries. Within a year, the homestead was rebuilt and back in business. It now had a new addition, the west wing.
- Legend says that the homestead is haunted by a young jilted bride, who is still waiting for her on-the-run fiance. The story goes that the woman who now haunts the boarders is a girl who committed suicide in the early 1900s after her husband-to-be left her on their wedding day.
- Guests have reported a wandering woman on the 14th floor of the hotel, stopping people and employees to ask for time.
- The resort was designated a National historic landmark. Many American presidents and notable people have stayed at the homestead. President Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Carl E. Schlutz, are some of the names among them.
- The homestead boasts of two large golf courses. The club is referred to as the "Virginia Hot Springs Golf And Tennis Club". The Casacades Course is the most famous, also mentioned in the top 100 U.S. courses by Golf Digest.
- The ski resort was inaugurated in the year 1959, making it the oldest Ski resort in Virginia.
- On March 21, 2009, in the hotel kitchen, two employees were shot and killed. It was declared as homicide and authorities suspected a fellow employee called Beacher Ferrel Hackerney.
- The homestead remians one of the most famous haunted resorts in America, and is a major attraction for vacationers.
