About Har Ki Pauri

Har Ki Pauri is the most popular tourist destination in India. It is a ghat located in the holy city of Haridwar beside the river Ganga. Thousands of pilgrims visit the place to take the holy bath. The name of the area consisted of the words “Har” which means Lord Vishnu and “Pauri” which means “Steps”, the whole name meant to be the steps of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Lord Vishnu visited the place during the Vedic times. The site remains open throughout the year and 24 hours a day. No fee is charged by the authority to visit the place, even the changing rooms are available free of cost for the female pilgrims. However, visitors can donate the money if they want to.

How To Reach Har Ki Pauri

As the place is the most important tourist place, visitors can reach here easily taking any local means of transport.

Air
The nearest airport to the place is Jollygrant Airport. From there you can take a taxi to Haridwar and reach the destination comfortably.

Train
Several trains are available which take you to the Haridwar station. After leaving your train, you can take a cycle rickshaw or auto-rickshaw which will leave you at Bhimghoda as rickshaws are not allowed after there. After a short walk, you will reach your desired destination.

Bus
Bus service is also a convenient means to reach the place. The same procedure is to be followed after reaching the Haridwar bus stand as after getting Railway Station.

Taxi
You can also reach the place with a taxi or private vehicle. After reaching taxi stand, you have to take a small walk to reach the holy ghat of Har Ki Pauri.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Har Ki Pauri

The ghat was built by King Vikramaditya in the 1st century BC in the memory of his brother named Bharthari, who used to meditate at this place on the bank of river Ganga.
According to the legends, the Brahmakund Amrit fell from the pitcher obtained from Samudra Manthan by Garuda. So the water here is treated as Amrit and whoever takes holy bath at the place will get a long healthy life.
Don’t miss the Ganga Aarti performed at the place with old tradition. People also floats Diyas with flowers in order to get blessings from Ganga. The sounds of bell ringing and large diyas in the hands of priests make the whole atmosphere majestic and gives a complete divine feeling to the visitors.
Mansa Devi temple is also located nearby. You can get there by taking pedestrian way or using a rope way available close to Har Ki Pauri.
If you are feeling hungry, tasty food is available at reasonable prices at the place. Non-vegetarian food and alcohol is not allowed in Haridwar. Also, most of the shops offer food without onion and garlic to make you completely feel divine.
One more interesting fact about Har ki Pauri is that the water in Ganga Canal in Rishav Haridwar is partially dried for the cleaning the river bed and for the repair works at the ghats. But the Ganga Aarti is performed regularly. The water is restored generally restored at the time of Diwali. According to the legends, Maa Ganga visits her paternal house on Dussehra and returns on the day of Bhai Dooj.
The ghat hosts Kumbh Mela after every twelve years and Ardh Kumbh at an interval of six years.
