About Golconda Fort
Golconda is an old fort situated in Hyderabad city of Telangana. The fort was built in 1600 and was an early capital of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. The fort was a trade center at the time and was known for the diamond mines located in the area. It was credited with some of the popular diamonds like Koh-i-Noor, Daria-i-Noor, Nizam, and Jacob. The site earned the status of UNESCO?s World heritage site in 2010. The fort opens every morning at nine and closes at 5:30 in the evening for a public visit throughout the week. It is just nine kilometers away from Hussain Sagar Lake. You can easily arrive here by taking a bus to the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station which is 12.3 kilometers from the fort. After which you can take a taxi or cab to arrive at your destination. The entry ticket for citizens of India is just INR 15 while for the foreigners they charge INR 200 per person.

  • Though the fort remains open throughout the year the best time to visit here is winters as the summers are quite hot in Hyderabad and it would be difficult to travel in the fort when afternoon heat fell directly on the fort.
  • Some people believed that the fort is haunted by the spirits of the soldiers and a dancer named Taramati. Many people also claimed that they have seen a shadow dancing in the fort. Some people also claim that they have heard the sound of ghungru inside the fort. However, during my visit to the fort, I don?t have any encounters with the ghost.
  • You can also visit nearby places like Hussain Sagar Lake, Birla Mandir, Qutb Shahi Tomb, Taramati Baradari, and Inorbit Mall. You can also enjoy food at nearby restaurants like Green Bawarchi Restaurant, Spice Junxion, Surya Restaurant, and Almond House.
