About Charles Fort
Charles Fort is a bastion fort located in County Cork Ireland. It is situated on the water?s edge on the south of Summer Cove, on Kinsale harbor. It was constructed in 1682 at the time of the Siege of Kinsale with an aim to defense the territory. It is a star-shaped fort and is named on Charles II. It is now a heritage tourism site and is owned by the Office of Public Works. It remains open all days of the week from 11 in the morning till 4:30 in the evening but hours may be different on public holidays. A ticket of 5 Euro is charged for an adult, however, if you are in a group or a senior citizen you have to pay only 4 Euro. The ticket for a child or a student is only 3 Euro and family can enter the premises by paying only 13 Euro.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Charles Fort
- The fort is reportedly haunted by a young bride dressed in white wedding gown. She had a tragic story and said to be a beloved daughter of the commander of Charles Fort, Warrender. She fell in love with a young touring soldier and both got married. The couple took an evening walk where the bride got attracted with a single white flower which was growing below. At the same time, a young sentry offered that he can bring the flower if her husband take his post and take care of musket. Both of them waited and waited, but the man never returned. At last, groom sent his wife to the chambers while himself stood at the place. As the groom himself was tired, he leaned on the musket. At the late night, the Commander was on the rounds and when found a sleeping soldier. As there was a rule, not to pardon the offender. He at the same time raised his gun and fired on the sleeping officer. At the same time, he came to know that it was his own son-in-law. After realizing his mistake, he took of his own life as he could not face his daughter. When the newlywed awoke and went in search of her husband and found dead bodies of both the men she loved. She died of the grief. Till today, her restless spirit wanders on the castle.
