Fortifications on the Caribbean Side of Panama is an old fort located in Panama. It was constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries on the order of the Spanish Empire at the Caribbean coastline of Colón Province. It was made with Neoclassical architecture style. It was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. However, it was put on the list of endangered Heritage Sites in July 2012 due to threats to the site because of inadequate maintenance, environmental concerns, and unchecked urban developments.

  • It is said that Christopher Columbus arrived at the place in 1502 and named it Puerto Bello.
  • The port was an important location for the Spanish Conquistadors who used to temporarily put the loot of gold and silver from the Incan mines. They used to transport the looted treasure from the Pacific side of the Isthmus of Panama to Portobelo and finally shipped it to the king of Spain.
  • It was used as a prison when Panama merged with Columbia. After that, it was used as a Post Office to deliver British mails to Latin America.
  • The 1849 California Gold Rush was here below the fort in Chagres town on the west bank of the Chagres River.
  • It is a group of several fortifications including San Jeronimo Battery Fort, Lower Battery and more.
