About Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Europe
The site includes forests from 12 European countries. The Ancient Beech Forests cover five locations in Germany while the Primeval Beech Forests are located in the Carpathians in ten separate locations. The forest also covers the area of Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia alongside Germany. The site was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site under the category Natural in 2007. About 29278 hectares is the protected area of the Carpathian site while over 77000 hectares in the buffer zone. The Primeval Beech Forests conserves 185 kilometers in a long axis from the Rakhiv Mountains and Chornohora ridge.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Europe
- Two national parks are included on the site. Both compose a separate biosphere reserve called the East Carpathian Biosphere Reserve.
- Some of the components of these forests are accessible to visitors. Studies in Bukovsky vrchy (Slovakia) also have hiking trails so that the visitors come and explore the life in these forests.
