About Tulum

Tulum is a city located in the Quintana Roo state of Mexico. It is located on a 12-meter high cliff. The city was inhabited by the Maya. It flourished during the 13th and 15th centuries. It was a major port for Coba. It was one of the last cities built by the Maya civilization. It was abandoned due to diseases brought by the Spanish settlers. Now it is a popular tourist place.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Tulum

The city has various beautiful beaches that attract various tourists who want to enjoy water sports, swimming and just to relax near the seaside.
It is on the third rank among the most visited Archeological sites in Mexico. Other two being Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza.
Its real name was Zama which means sunrise. Its current name was given after it was discovered due to its walls.
Very few of us know that Zapotecs, Aztec nobles, and other cultures studied astronomy here at the time it was on peak.
There was strict access to the ships due to the existence of coastal reefs and if they are not in a straight line in front of the lighthouse, the ship would sink.
The place also serves as the largest natural aquarium in the world due to the existence of different marine species in the nearby sea. It could be accessed by scuba diving.
