About Timbuktu
Timbuktu is the capital city of the Tombouctou Region of Mali. It is situated in the north of the Niger River about 20 kilometers away from its bank. It was an important trade center in the 14th century. It flourished after a visit by Mansa Musa. The city was popular for trading goods like gold, salt, ivory, and slaves. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 and was included in the list of endangered sites in 1990.
