About The Bahamas
The Bahamas or Commonwealth of The Bahamas, as it is officially known is a country famous for its pristine white sand beaches and turquoise waters. It is a much favored tourist attraction for the various water activities, wonderful wildlife and colorful carnivals.
Some Lesser Known Facts About The Bahamas
- The Bahamas was also ruled by the Britishers until it eventually obtained independence in the year 1973. The name "Bahamas" is derived from Lucayan Taino, although some historians believe it is from the Spanish "bajama" meaning shallow water.

- The archipelago includes around 700 islands and cays. About 30 of the islands and cays are inhabited, and more than 2,000 are barren rock formations. The 30 include Grand Bahamas, Great Inagua Island, etc.

- The Pink sands beach, which is self-explanatory, has beautiful pink sand that results from Foraminifera, a microscopic marine animal with a bright pink or red shell.

- 26th December of every year, Junkanoo, is celebrated here. It is noted to be one of the most amusing carnivals across the globe. Parades through the streets of Nassau can be seen with people wearing colorful costumes.

- The national flower of the Bahamas is the Yellow Elder. Lignum Vitae and flamingo are the national tree and national bird, respectively. The blue marlin is deemed to be the national fish.

- Mount Alvernia on Cat Island is about 63 meters in altitude and is the highest peak in the Bahamas.

- The popular "swimming pigs" on the "pig beach" are not native to the land. Some say they were left by sailors and were meant to be taken back, however they never were. The big major cay is depopulated.
