About Paphos

Paphos is a city located in the southwest of Cyprus. It is the capital of Paphos District. The district is divided into two parts Old Paphos and New Paphos. The city is connected with the A6 highway. The airport situated in Paphos district is the second largest airport in the country after Larnaca International Airport. The city is spread in an area of over 162 hectares. The city has a population of over a million people including city, urban, and metro populations. The city is enriched with quality transport, hospitals, and educational institutions.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Paphos

It is believed that the city is named after goddess Aphrodite as Paphos was the son of the goddess and Pygmalion. It is also said that the great temple of the goddess was built by Paphos' son. However, according to other legends, it was founded by Amazons.
Besides being a UNESCO-protected World Heritage Site, the city also offers clean and family-friendly beaches. These are ideal for organizing a picnic and for diving.
It is believed that Cyprus was gifted to Queen Cleopatra by Mark Anthony. The main harbor of the city was built at the time of Alexander the Great. The tomb which was built in the third century BC is still present there.
The Odeon Theatre situated in the city was built by Romans in the second century AD.
Saint Paul used to worship here at the Pillar of Saint Paul in 45 AD.
In 117 AD, there was a Jewish Rebellion on the site which is also an important event in the history of the city.
