About San Agustin Church
San Agustin Church is a popular church in Manila, Philippines. It is situated inside well known walled city of Intramuros. The construction of the church started in 1586 and was completed in 1607. It is a Baroque-style church designed by Juan Macias. The church covers an area of 2.43 hectares having a length of 67.15 meters and a width of 24.93 meters. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 as a part of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines.

The church is easy to reach via a Bus or Jeep. You can also go there using Light Rail Transport route number 1. The nearest train stations are Central Terminal Lrt and Recto Lrt from there the church is at 17 minute and 31-minute walking distance respectively. Your bus will leave you at Bonifacio Drive it takes only five minutes to reach the church. If you get off at Andres Soriano Jr Ave or Juan Luna Monument, the church is an 8-minute walking distance from you. The Railroad Drive and Padre Burgos Street are at a 9-minute walking distance from the destination.

  • The church is popular for being the oldest stone church all over the Philippines.
  • It is not the first church made on the site. Before this structure, there was a church made with bamboo and nipa which was constructed in 1571 and was destroyed in a fire in December 1574. The second wooden church was also burned in 1583. After three years a decision to make a church with stone was made.
  • The architecture of the church is similar to some of the magnificent Augustinian temples situated in Mexico. It also reflects a glimpse of the Spanish golden era. It is beautifully decorated with symmetry and splendor of the interiors which were painted by two Italians.

  • The church has witness burials of famous persons like Miguel López de Legazpi, Juan Luna, Juan de Salcedo, and Blessed Peter Zuniga.
  • It was used as a concentration camp by the Japanese troops during World War II. The residents and clergy were held by them as captive. The church also saw the killings of several hostages by the Japanese. The roof of the church was damaged while the monastery which was located close to the church was destroyed. It was replaced by a museum.
