About St. Mary The Virgin Church
The St. Mary?s church (fomerly, old Parish church) lies in the village of clophill, between bedford and luton. Out of the two churches, it is the newer one and the only one that was used for worship. It now lies abandoned and in ruins.
Some Lesser Known Facts About St. Mary The Virgin Church
- The most well-known and interesting fact about this church is that it is facing the "wrong way", i.e, instead of facing east, where the sun rises, or as in Christian faith, towards heaven, it faces the other way and "away from God."
- Formerly known as the Old Parish church, it was built in the year 1350. It was later abandoned when a an alternative church was built to a more suitable location in the 19th century.
- Tales of satanic presence and evil forces are popular among people, when it comes to St. Mary's abandoned church. There has been much talk of its "opening the doors to hell", for it lies against the usual east facing churches.
- Rumors of witnessing the ghost of a "hooded monk" have come to light by visitors and ghost-hunters.
- As the new church was built, the old one was used as a mortuary chapel for the graveyard. It is also said, that the site is haunted by grave-robbers. Bones have been seen dug up and burial sites disturbed.
- The old church acquired a notorious reputation,especially in the 1970s and the years following, for unexplainable activities in the dead of the night. Rumor has it that a makeshift altar of bones was once discovered inside the premises.
- Disturbing evidence of cattle mutilation was discovered on the grounds, which some may argue, may have been the actions of a cult. But the actions are dubious, either way. The regular defiling of graves and the general spooky atmosphere, is enough to tempt those interested in the ocuult.
- The old building is Perpendicular in style with ashlar dressings and ironstone rubble. Later, the large perpendicular windows and the west hall was added, sometime in the 19th century.
- The church now lies in ruins, following a collapsed roof, vandalism and neglect over time. The presence of on-site wardens has helped in the prevention of anti-social behavior.
- Efforts are being made to preserve and protect the heritage of the site, with the help of on-site wardens, legal persons, and police officers to discourage anti-social acts and behavior, aid is being provided to stabilize the ruin and to repair the damage.
- A steel staircase was added so people could climb the tower, and use it as a viewing platform. "Eco lodges" are being built which are rooms for accommodation for people staying nearby.
