About Saint Margarets Church
Saint Margaret's Church is a church situated under the Westminster Abbey in the Parliament Square of London in England. The church was constructed in the 12th century and was rebuilt in the period between 1486 to 1523. It was built by Benedictine monks in order to make the worship place available to the people living around the Abbey. It became a world heritage site in 1987. The church was restored and altered in 1878 by Sir George Gilbert Scott.

  • The surprising fact about the church is that several doors at the church were found by Sir George Gilbert Scott which was covered with human skin when he was working on a restoration plan for the church. According to historians, it was the skin of William the Sacrist who robbed from the king in 1303. It was a big plan and a number of his gang members were hiding as monks at this church. It is said, that he was flayed alive as a punishment and his skin was used to make these doors.

  • There was an attempt to stop the First World War on the ground of church by a headmaster of Eton named Edward Lyttelton. He gave a lecture based on the theme of "Loving your enemies" and promoted a post-war treaty with Germany but he was opposed and had to leave the church from a back door. The "Rule Britannia" was sung to protest his attitude.
