About Pilgrimage Church of Wies
The Pilgrimage Church of Wies is an old Baroque-style church situated in the Weilheim-Schongau district of Bavaria, Germany. The church was constructed in the late 1740s and was designed by brothers J. B. and Dominikus Zimmermann. The church is situated on the foothill of the Alps mountains. The area covered by the church is approximately 0.1 hectares. It was designated as the World Heritage Site in 1983. The church remains open from 8 in the morning to 7 in the evening in summer while in winter closing time changes to five in the evening.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Pilgrimage Church of Wies
- The church is associated with a legend that in 1738, there were tears on a dilapidated wooden figure of the Scourged Saviour. When the other people heard about this, the crowd started coming to see the sculpture. Many people claimed that they have been cured of their diseases after praying in front of the statue. Following the miracle, a separate shrine was made due to the increased number of pilgrims in the church.

- There was a plan of the Bavarian government to sell or demolish the rococo masterpiece at the time of secularization of Bavaria but local farmers protested against the decision and saved the old heritage.
