About Gesu Church
The Gesu Church is a Roman Catholic church with historical significance. It is tended to by the Roman Catholic order known as the Jesuits. The Church is known for its long history, the beautiful architecture, and as a spiritual center in downtown Miami.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Gesu Church
- The church is a designated National historic landmark and has a history spanning over 120 years. It was founded in the year 1896 and is the oldest church in Miami.

- In 1921, the first cornerstone of this concrete and steel structure was laid, on land donated by railroad magnate Henry M. Flagler, to suit the needs of the growing Catholic community in Miami.

- Many generations of the military have accepted the Sacraments here: from the Spanish-American War in 1898 to the soldiers returning from World War I in 1917, and during World War II in the 1940s.

- It is built in the Mediterranean Revival style and has beautiful glass stained windows. It has a basement half a level down from the sidewalk and the main floor half a level up, accessed by stairs to the portico. Similar to the Gesu in Rome, there is no narthex and there are no aisles.

- And though it was founded in 1896, its origins can be traced back to 1567, when Jesuit missionaries arrived with the Spanish settlement founded by Don Pedro Menendez de Avila.

- The church received the Cuban exiles and was a safe haven for the people that had lost everything. Gesu Elementary School educated hundreds of Cuban children that later went on to college.

- Jesuits have also worked with the sick, priests serving as chaplains at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Veterans? Hospital, and Cedars of Lebanon Hospital.
