Salginatobel Bridge is a reinforced concrete bridge that crosses the Saligina Valley in Switzerland. The arch bridge was designed by Swiss civil engineer Robert Maillart. The bridge was constructed between 1929 and 1930. It is about 133 meters longs and 3.5 meters wide. It was constructed at a cost of 180 thousand Swiss Francs. It has the capacity to take a load of 8000 kilograms. The bridge is used by about 2500 local people but also caught the attention of designers who often visits the site to take an idea.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Salginatobel Bridge
- Before designing the masterpiece, Maillart also designed a three-hinged arch bridge in 1904 over the Rhine. The bridge was liquidated in September 1927 due to an avalanche. But this gave him an experience and he created this bridge in 1929.
- The arch of the bridge is 133 meters long and the main element to making it is a hollow concrete box girder on the central part of the arch. It is supported by reinforced concrete pillars at the end.
- Though it is a masterpiece there are some faults like the bridge deck is not made waterproof, poor drainage system and low concrete cover also makes the bridge low durable. Attempts are made from time to time to keep the bridge safe and alive.
