Bijli Mahadev is an ancient temple located in Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh. It is a Kath Kunni Style temple at an elevation of 2460 meters from sea level. The temple is situated about 14 kilometers from Kull across the Beas river. After three kilometers trek, you can reach the beautiful temple of Bijli Mahadeva also known as Thunder Mahadeva. The panoramic view of Kullu and Paravati valleys excites every visitor. The temple is a home to a 60 feet high staff which shines like a silver needle in the sun.
Legend
The story that is prevalent among the locals is that there was a devil named Kulant who wanted to flood the whole valley by stopping the water of Baes river, he has an intention to submerge the whole living creatures present in the valley into the water. For the purpose, he transformed himself into a giant python. At the same time, Lord Shiva came to kill the demon. Lord Shiva asked the devil to look behind and cleverly put fire on his tail. It is said that the temple is located on the corpse of this devil which was converted into a mountain after his death.

The staff attracts divine blessings. It is said that the lightning struck at the temple in an interval of twelve years. According to the locals, Lord Shiva takes the pain of lightning on himself to protect devotees. Whenever the lightning stuck at the temple, it breaks the Shiv lingam into pieces and the priest wraps the lingam with butter and lingam again becomes as it was before.
