The tunnel, located on the Yamunotri end of National Highway 134, was expected to shorten the route by approximately 20 kilometers.

The collapse occurred around 5:30 am local time, approximately 200 meters from the tunnel entrance. Immediate rescue efforts were initiated, led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the police.
Initial Rescue Efforts
The rescue teams faced numerous challenges from the outset. The initial plan involved drilling a narrow pipe into the rubble heap to provide the trapped workers with essential supplies such as oxygen, food, and medicine. However, the attempt to create a wider passage for the workers to crawl out horizontally proved unsuccessful due to ongoing debris falls and the risk of further collapses.
Despite these setbacks, the rescue teams persevered and managed to establish communication with the trapped workers through walkie-talkies. The first glimpse of the workers was captured on video, showing their hopeful faces and providing a much-needed boost in morale for the rescuers.
Stymied by Challenges
As the rescue operation entered its second week, the teams encountered new obstacles and had to adapt their strategies accordingly. The fragile mountain terrain and the fear of triggering further collapses posed significant risks. The initial drilling machine broke, necessitating the airlifting of a backup machine from Indore city to expedite the rescue efforts.
To overcome the challenges, authorities devised multiple plans for extracting the trapped workers. One approach involved drilling vertically from the top of the mountain into the tunnel, while alternative access tunnels were also being constructed parallel to the main tunnel. These parallel tunnels aimed to provide additional escape routes for the workers.
A Ray of Hope
Despite the difficulties, the rescuers managed to send vital supplies to the trapped workers through the newly-drilled pipe. Oxygen, dry food, and even hot meals were transported to sustain the men during their ordeal. Additionally, a small flexible camera was inserted through the pipe, allowing the workers to communicate with their loved ones and providing a glimpse into their condition.
The workers' families, who had anxiously awaited news outside the tunnel, were reassured by regular contact with their trapped loved ones. Indrajit Kumar, whose brother Biswajit Kumar was among the marooned workers, expressed relief and stated, "They are all safe inside."
The Way Forward
As the rescue operation continues, the authorities remain committed to saving the lives of the trapped workers. The drilling of a vertical shaft from the surface and the resumption of horizontal drilling through the rubble heap are pivotal strategies being pursued. However, caution must be exercised to ensure the stability of the environment and prevent further risks.
Environmental concerns have been raised regarding major construction projects in the ecologically fragile Himalayan region. The Uttarakhand government has formed an expert committee to investigate the cause of the tunnel collapse and address these concerns.
Collaboration and Support
The rescue teams have sought assistance from international experts, including the team that successfully rescued students from the Tham Luang cave in Thailand in 2018. The collaboration with experienced teams aims to leverage their expertise and knowledge to enhance the rescue operation.
The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been closely monitoring the situation. The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has assured that all possible support will be provided to the rescue agencies and that the safety and well-being of the trapped workers remain the top priority.
