If you are a fan of rock music, there is no way you haven't heard about Marilyn Manson. He established himself and his eponymous band as a household name during the 1990s. And in addition to his popularity in music, he is also noted as one of the most iconic and controversial figures in the history of heavy metal music. Here's a glimpse of a few controversies in his life.
Columbine High School Massacre
Manson become a hot topic of discussion across media outlets after his name was attached to the school shooting at Columbine High School. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who were students of Columbine High School became a reason for a massacre at their school on April 20, 1999, killing 12 students and a teacher and injuring 21 students. The school shooting and attempted bombing was really horrific incident of the time as no one has seen anything of this sort before.
In the following days, many media reports alleged that their mentality was impacted by violence in entertainment, particularly movies, video games, and music. The reports stated the killers were fans of The German bands KMFDM and Rammstein however mostly the blame was directed at Marilyn Manson.
Media covered the incident with headlines such as "Killers Worshipped Rock Freak Manson" and "Devil-Worshipping Maniac Told Kids To Kill". Numerous politicians blamed Manson for promoting "hate, violence, death, suicide, drug use, and the attitudes and actions of the Columbine High School killers.” Later carious reports suggested that none of the killers neither Harris nor Klebold was a fan of Marilyn Manson.
The band, however, withdrew the remaining four dates of the concert out of respect for the victims. They also addressed the matter and stated that music, movies, books, or video games were not to blame.
11 days post the massacre, Manson penned an op-ed piece for Rolling Stone called "Columbine: Whose Fault Is It?".
On the incident, he stated, "I couldn't care less about those kids' reasoning. What reason do we have to go to war? It's all the same. Killing somebody can't be justified by having a reason. I think it says a lot about the media that those two kids were on the cover of Time magazine twice because I'm sure that's everything they wanted. They wanted fame. America sold them the idea that an obituary is just another headline.
The Nun Murder Incident
His name was dragged in a murder case after an old nun was killed by three schoolgirls in Italy. The incident took place in 2000 and got high media covered after allegedly various references to Manson as well as his pictures were found in the dairies of the girls. Following the murder, he was taken into custody after a concert in Rome for allegedly disorderly conduct. He addressed the event stating, the arrest was politically boosted after his name was implicated in the nun murder by Italian media.
Another School Shooting
The band’s name was sucked into another school shooting, which happened on October 10, 2007. A SuccessTech Academy student named Asa Coon killed 4 people by shooting them and later killed himself. Before the incident, the 14-year-old Asa was punched in the face by another student while he was exiting a bathroom. He killed his attacker by shooting him in the abdomen. He got armed with two revolvers and moved down a hallway opening fire that wounded another student and two teachers. Following that, he proceeded to a bathroom nearby and killed himself. The kid was wearing a black Marilyn Manson T-shirt during the incident.
