While the former couple shared a lot of happy moments, they also had hard times. On 20 September 2016, Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt, citing irreconcilable differences. From their joint movie projects to their top-secret wedding in France, here's a look back at Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's relationship.

First Meet
Pitt and Jolie ruled Hollywood as one of the most iconic couples. The ex-couple first met in the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2003. In the film, they played the part of husband and wife.
At the time, Brad was still married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston. Whereas Jolie was enjoying being a single mother after her separation from Billy Bob Thornton. Maddox Chivan was adopted by Jolie and Thornton in March 2002. The couple dissolved their marriage in May 2003. In January 2005, Pitt and Aniston also announced their separation citing irreconcilable differences.

Separation With Then Partners
During the divorce proceedings of Pitt and Aniston, the media took a special interest in his involvement with Angelina Jolie. Jolie was in the headlines after being accused of causing a rift between actors Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. Mr. & Mrs. Smith stars stated that they fell in love with the set and that there was no infidelity.

On the matter, Jolie said, "To be intimate with a married man when my own father cheated on my mother, is not something I could forgive. I could not look at myself in the morning if I did that. I wouldn't be attracted to a man who would cheat on his wife." Jolie later opened up about the two during an interview with Vogue, where she stated it wasn't love at first sight. They just made a good team.

Beginning of their Relationship
In April 2005, paparazzi pictures of Pitt, Jolie, and her son Maddox at a beach in Kenya started to make headlines. It was just a month after Aniston had filed for divorce. The photos were interpreted by the press as evidence of a relationship between Pitt and Jolie. The year was the beginning of their relationship with them being noticed and photographed by paparazzi frequently. Media then coined the term Brangelina for the couple.

Relationship Confirmation
It was only in January 2006 that their relationship was publicly confirmed as she opened up about her being pregnant with Pitt's child. At the time, tup they were dubbed one of Hollywood's most glamorous couples. The two were the subject of worldwide media coverage. Their family was growing with now six children, three of whom were adopted. Pitt announced that he intends to adopt Angelina's Children. Later, Jolie filed a petition to legally change her children’s surname from Jolie to Jolie-Pitt. The petition was granted on January 19, 2006.
Engagement, Marriage & Divorce
Seven years and Six children later, the couple announced their engagement in April 2012. The news was broken by Pitt's manager Cynthia Pett-Dante. Cynthia confirmed that the couple got officially engaged on April 12, 2012. She said, "Yes, it's confirmed". "It is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy. There is no date set at this time."
The couple exchanged vows 20 in a private wedding ceremony among 20 of their closest friends and relatives. The ceremony took place in the chapel of Château Miraval, France on August 23, 2014. They had their documents signed and were legally married before the ceremony in Los Angeles on August 14, 2014. Jolie took on the name "Angelina Jolie Pitt" after the marriage.
Citing irreconcilable differences, Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt two years into the marriage in September 2016. Their divorce was finalized in April 2019.

Custody Case
Pitt and Jolie had been in ongoing negotiations regarding custody of their children over the last few years. The two were legal guardians of the six children and it got pretty messy as the case went on.
In May 2021, Pitt was awarded more time with his and Jolie's five minor children by Judge John Ouderkirk. Though, just two months later the verdict was upturned after a three-judge panel disqualified Ouderkirk from the case. He was disqualified due to a violation of "his ethical obligations." It was revealed that Ouderkirk did not unveil his business relationships with Pitt's attorney, which could cloud his decision in making a biased judgment. Angelina Jolie speaks about her split from Brad Pitt stating, "I'm not the kind of person who makes decisions like the decisions I had to make lightly. It took a lot for me to be in a position where I felt I had to separate from the father of my children."

Legal Battles and Abuse Allegations
In 2021, Pitt sued Jolie for selling her share of a winery they owned to a third party. He alleged that Jolie failed to receive his permission before selling her shares to the Stoli Group. She violated a previous agreement that neither would do so without the other person's approval.
The following year, the actor made additional allegations against Jolie. He accused her of destructing the reputation of the wine business by retailing her shares to a stranger. 12 Monkeys actor alleged that Jolie deliberately "sought to inflict harm on" him making the retail deal.
Jolie filed a countersuit, which uncovered the nasty side of their relationship. In the middle of the ongoing case, an FBI report related to the ex-couples September 14, 2016 conflict was uncovered in the media. According to the report, Ocean's Eleven actor allegedly clutched and shook Jolie during a private flight from France to Los Angeles. He pushed her into a wall and punched the plane's ceiling.

In the reports, Jolie had also claimed that he "poured beer on" her at one point. When she said it seemed "like he was going to attack" one of their children for calling him a "prick" during the dispute, Jolie recounted wrapping her arms around Pitt's neck in a chokehold style. Jolie said Pitt was "becoming a monster" as he "ranted" and "mimicked the behavior of a monster and screamed at them." She added that she and the kids were "shell-shocked," saying she was "frozen, scared, and didn't know what to do." Jolie also claimed that his actions made her feel "like a hostage" on the plane.
The Los Angeles Department of Child and Family Services concluded its investigation into the incident in November 2016 with no findings of abuse. The FBI also closed its investigation that month with no charges. Pitt denied any abuse.

Pitt's Image in Public
After the FBI report was made public, a source close to Pitt stated that the actor thinks Jolie is set out to hurt him.
