Her cancer journey started when she discovered a spot after her periods, which lasted for 10–12 days. She consulted a gynecologist, who suggested an ultrasound. A CT scan was done after that, where a lump of her left ovary was diagnosed. She then consulted Dr. Meenakshi Ahuja at Fortis Hospital in Greater Kailash, Delhi.
At first, she insisted for a laser removal of the lump as she doesn’t want a cut on her body which could affect her career. But after the 12-hours surgery, doctors were not happy with the result and recommended a biopsy. Later on, after few more checks, it was detected as cancer stage one. And the doctors suggests an open-cut surgery to check if cancer has spread further. Doctors advised her to get admitted as soon as possible but she doesn’t want to miss two of her coming shows. On open-cut surgery was performed on August 17, 2022, which required 35 stitches on her stomach.
After the surgery, it requires six chemo-sessions to remove the cancer fully from the body and she shaved her head after the first. She is so optimistic that she don’t let the hope and remained dancing in-between her chemo-sessions. She said that dancing gives her strength, and she did about 12 shows in this period. Alaknanda danced wearing a turban on the song “Chaap Tilak” and removed her turban to reveal her bald head. Not only she showed a positive outlook toward life but also for the looks. She doesn’t shy of being bald, but also broke the age-old stereotype of having a long black hair of a classical dancer.
